CASIMIR Workshop
Organized by V. Aidinis/GR

CASIMIR (www.casimir.org.uk) is a Co-ordination Action funded by the European Commission, aiming to gather information and make recommendations on the integration of databases and resources throughout Europe that contain genetic and phenotypic data of relevance to the mouse as a model organism for human disease. CASIMIR workshop will be hosted by BIBE 2008 and will be held on Friday, 10 October, 2008 at Royal Olympic Hotel. CASIMIR workshop will feature a BIBE special session (CASIMIR-Database Interoperability & Ontologies) with invited oral presentations and a round table (CASIMIR Network Meeting). The technical program for CASIMIR workshop is as follows:

Tutorial “Introduction to Bioinformatics”
Organized by E. Bongcam-Rudloff/SE and S. Kossida/GR

The Tutorial “Introduction to Bioinformatics” will be held on Wednesday, 8 October, 2008 in co-operation with the Biomedical Research Foundation – BRF (www.bioacademy.gr) of the Academy of Athens, Greece. It is organized by Professor Erik Bongcam-Rudloff (Linnaeus Center of Bioinformatics, Sweden), president of the EMBnet (www.embnet.org) and Dr. Sophia Kossida (BRF, Greece). The main objective of the course is to introduce young scientists to, and encourage application of, bioinformatics/computational biology tools in their research and to present some of the biological resources available on the web. The course will include lectures and hands-on tutorials in the following topics: Biological Databases, BLAST, EnsEMBL. All necessary material for the tutorial will be available on tutorial’s day under http://teacher.bmc.uu.se/BIBE08.

The technical program of the tutorial is as follows:

Wednesday, 8 October, 2008            BRF Multimedia and Videoconference room

08.30 – 09.30 Introduction to Biological Databases
09.45 – 10.30 Information Retrieval
11.00 – 12.00 Hands-on tutorial (Group A)
12.00 – 13.00 Hands-on tutorial (Group B)

For the hands-on tutorial, attendees will be divided into two groups (Group A, Group B). While one group is going through the tutorial, the other group will be having a guided tour at the premises of BRF.

There will be a live transmission of the tutorial to the conference venue.

A shuttle bus service will be available for the trasportation of the tutorial participants between the Conference venue and the BRF, according to the following schedule

08.00 Departure from the Royal Olympic hotel
13.00 Departure from the BRF
