Vorres Museum, Athens

We will tour the gardens and the folk museum of Vorres and its modern art collection and then we will dine in the section of contemporary Greek art.
We intend to have a wonderful night with friends, lots of delicious home-made Greek food, the opportunity to make new friends, and, of course, free-flowing red and white wine. Buses will leave the banquet location at 23:30, to head back to the hotel at about 24:00 hours.

The Vorres Museum and its collections cover 3000 years of Greek history and consist of a complex of six acres of buildings, courtyards, and gardens. The museum is divided into two main sections.

The first comprises a group of two traditional village houses and the remnants of a stable that date back to the early 19th century and which feature peasant artifacts, Greek carpets, ceramics, icons, rare furniture, and antiquities. It is important to keep in mind that this section is not a careful and exact reconstruction of traditional old Greek peasant houses. It is rather a re-adaptation and readjustment of traditional Greek architectural features and of popular artifacts and objects used in daily Greek life, to reveal their inherent beauty and their practical use. The whole complex serves as a means of convincing contemporary Greeks to save and preserve their national heritage.

The whole complex serves as a means of convincing contemporary Greeks to save and preserve their national heritage. The second section constitutes a museum of contemporary Greek art, in which paintings and sculptures by leading Greek artists of the second half of the 20th century are on display.  The paintings and sculptures in the Vorres collection represent some of their best works.  The collection is arranged and exhibited in groups of paintings displaying related subjects and colour compositions.  Also shown, are the works of leading Greek artists living abroad.
The typically Greek courtyards and gardens of the museum are a special attraction.  It took 45 years to complete the Vorres Museum, which is considered one of the most beautiful and original of its kind in the world.
